Promotional strategies research

Promotional strategies research

Over the years being able to promote yourself as an artist and getting yourself known has become essential to "bringing in the big bucks" and becoming a successful artist. In earlier times promoting yourself would have been much harder than recent years, lack of technology for communications and travel would have made it very difficult and the basic, posters, ads in newspapers and on radio stations to promote the artist would have been the biggest and best ways of making yourself a household name. There was also a lack of ways to play your music to the public, records and the radio being some of the earliest forms of playing music which then over the years evolved, tapes and Cd's and television came around with the likes of Top of the pops which was the sole channel for music on TVs starting in 1964 and was in episodes on a weekly format. Finally evolving into the wonderful yet controversial music industry of today, with hundreds of channels dedicated to non-stop music and hundreds of social media sites capable of promoting and connecting the artist with today's world.

A&R's
In today's world we have A&R's, artist and repitoire, personnel that are at a record label with the task of finding new talent and developing them to  their best standard. These people will start off at gigs and listening to unsigned artists to find "talent". Once found they will choose things like producers, engineers and studios for the artist to work with and overall produce the music that will make them their millions. These songs will be rated on the best and the ones with the most potential to be popular and even no.1's will be picked out to publicise further. Once the record is ready to be released the A&R will be informing outlets, shops and the radio to hype the song and get them excited for the release. This will attract the attention of the customers who will in turn buy the album. It is likely that the A&R will have looked into the artist before hand to find out how they have put in effort to build up their own fanbase and be connected in all the social netwroks etc, therefore when hyping the record up and getting poeple intrested for sales it should be quite straight foward.

Marketing
Marketing, again aided by technology, is much easier than before. Sites such as youtube and spotify are prime examples of an artist getting their music heard, anyone can access and listen to their work and then decide wether they are good ore not. Record labels are also able to access their work and will pick out the good bands and artist, in a way guiding the public to listen to their chosen artists. TV talent shows and competitions again are another way of marketing artists, shows like the Xfactor and Britains got talent can promote atrists, sometimes by finding new talent on the actual show or because of guest appearences. Tv competitions can be won where you win tickets to see an artist or get merchandise promoting an artist, sometimes even spend the day with the artist, even further promoting the artist.

Selling the music

New ways of selling the music are again mad eavailable by new technology. The internet opened up new markets such as selling digital copies of songs and albums on things like Itunes, also a promotional free song is often found on such websites promoting the artist further. The actual hard copies willl yhave dropped in sales because of htis however CD's are still the latest form of the hard copy of music, still sold in their millions and very effective. Digipaks which i have looked into in previous post are still very effective, especially to people wanting collectors editions, the digipak will usually come with extra information and merchandise promoting the band. The digital age has revolutionised the way we buy and listen to music, having songs and albums at just a click away has made it extremely easy for artists to be known and become a success.

De-constructing the music for our chosen track

De-constructing the music

The band, as shown in previous posts e.g. Scar bio, is a band of the rock genre. Rock is a genre of music that is very common and it is common for a rock artist to be a band. Stereotypically rock bands comprise of about 3-5 male members, however there are bands that are all female or have females in them e.g. Haim an indie rock band from California. The rock bands are all about the instruments and rebellious rock 'n' roll lifestyle that the band members lead. Typically seen in a rock band are the drums, rhythm guitar, lead guitar and base guitar and all have their legendary figures that can be related to them Jimi Hendrix, John Bonham etc.  The rock music is usually quite fast paced and full of drum solos and guitar solos, however Scar's music and especially the song we have chosen doesn't follow these conventions as much, it still however is fairly fast paced and contains the same instruments and still accumulates to be of the rock genre. Typically the front man or lead singer is the most known, examples being Mick Jagger of the rolling stones and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. The music of the band Scar I would describe as quite relaxed more gentle rock rather than the traditional Cymbal smashing, guitar solos old style maybe slightly harsher rock, because of this we have adapted our video to suit this, thus the idea of a relationship and something more light hearted rather than our other option that is harsh, dark and slightly depressing.

Why? is the next question. We chose this band for several reasons. One main reason we chose this band and their genre is because we feel we could easily relate to it as our group share similar interest in the rock genre. Also because we are the target audience for this genre, therefore we feel, as the audience, we can provide the ideas that the audience want from this genre in terms of the promo video. We also felt that many of our friends and family would be familiar with the genre and therefore when planning questionnaires and getting audience research from the people that surround us every day could easily provide information that is representative of the audience and genre. Another reason we chose this band and genre is that when listening around for songs we believed we could produce a promotional video for this one in particular , when looking at the lyrics we decided an illustrative video could be very easily done, and intertextuality video could easily be done, and so could an amplification version therefore keeping our options open (didn't include disjuncture as that would be an option that could be done for any music and very easily). Lastly we saw the opportunity for better and more creative editing than the traditional rock videos. Generally quick cuts would be about the most editing in the rock genre music video, although it is a music video and not a big budget film that could do with lots of  extravagant edits, in what we plan to do we are able to use more effects than usual and different shot types and camera movements, e.g blur effect, pans, tilts and many other unconventional editing types and camera movements.

Groupings and Cast

I, Elliott humbles, will be playing the nerd character in the video we have planned for the song "As long as you know" by SCAR. I will be wearing the most stereotypical costume we can find for a nerd character (see Costume). The scenes that will be done with this character will be the games console and female scene, doing maths and female scene and various band shots where this character will be playing the bass guitar.

This is Edwina Mears, another member of the group. As media students we all share something in common, Eddie usually has some very good ideas, does drama and therefore is also good at acting and director roles, well organized and lastly has some good contacts for location e.g. Tolethorpe hall. In the actual production she will also star in the video as the female character seen in the narrative side of the promo. She will be seen in scenes such as those with the nerd character, punk character and lead character (see Storyboard for a clearer idea of the scenes), the costume of this character will be a floaty white dress (see Costume) . On day one of the shoot she will also be directing the shoot of the band shots and doing the majority of the filming as the rest of us feature in this part (however we will all have a say in what is happening obviously).

Ben Thorogood is yet another member of the group. He is the "go to guy" for the tech aspect of the shooting and editing processes, he is also a music and drama student giving him acting, directing and music skills that are all key to the music promo we will be producing. In our video he will be playing, and only recently changed, the punk drummer. He was originally cast as the camp guitarist, however due to casting issues this character was scrapped and he became the drummer. As a drummer himself he has the knowledge to produce some very convincing drumming allowing it to be easily synced with the track. Clothing will again be as stereotypical to the typical punk as possible (again see Costume). On both days he will have equal input into the filming and acting as the rest of us, however a great deal of input will be expected as he has drawn the storyboards thus allowing me to produce a shooting script for us to go by.

Becky Doyle

The last member of our media group is Becky Doyle. She is again a keen media student sharing interests with all group members. She has a great deal of input into the majority of the creative aspects of the video and ancillary tasks, especially because she is also a keen artist and therefore her creative ideas shine through. Although Becky was originally our main director and cameraman and would not be featured in the actual video, due to casting issues for the punk drummer which Ben has now filled, with a lot of persuasion, Becky has taken the place that was originally the camp guitarist with what will now be a regular female guitarist (see Changes in the plan) with a joke involved.

As all other characters were cast for by ourselves with the exception of the lead we had to find someone who would fit the bill, someone who was free from other commitments on both days of filming and wouldn't mind being the front man to our band. This fell to the task of Luke Doyle, Becky's brother (she believed he owed her a favor, so there were no brother vs sister disputes). He is a previous media student and has played as the lead singer in other produced promos so we knew he would be both comfortable and capable of doing the job. As the lead he plays as the "normal" guy who is in a serious relationship with the female character, all as part of the narrative.

Itinerary/schedule

Wednesday night:

Pick up lighting fixtures and the dimmerbox.
Pack ready for the morning ahead.

Thursday:

Due to complications in casting we only have the one car to take people to the filming location, therefore i shall be doing all the driving throughout the day and making 6 total trips to ensure all equipment and cast are there.
Ben and Eddie will leave the Mears household at 9 am to head down to Tolethorpe,
Arrive at Tolethorpe for 9:30 am and start setting up band equipment. Leave Eddie at Tolethorpe, making sure equipment is safe. Get back to Bourne leisure center pick up remaining cast and crew. Head back to the Mears household to pick up the lighting equipment and head back to Tolethorpe.
Finish set up by 10:30am. This includes lighting and drum kit.
10:30 am - 12:30 pm - filming
12:30pm  - 1:20pm  - lunch
1:20pm - 4pm - Continued filming
4pm travelling back to Bourne in the same manner as how we got there, 3 more car journeys required.

Friday:

All cast and crew to arrive at Ben's house for 10am, Eddie shall be bringing the lighting from her house.
10am onward - set up all equipment and set needed and proceed with filming the narrative until done.
After 4pm - filming 'lady and tramp' scenes. These scenes require a dark setting so we waited until sunset to film them. This however led to complications with equipment, kindly Becky let us borrow her camera to allow us to get the shots done.
